Living Values: A Guidebook

A Publication in Honor of the United Nations' Fiftieth Anniversary

Compiled and Edited by the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University

"To reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person . . . "

(Preamble, United Nations Charter)

Values -- A Critical Success Factor:

Core values are fundamental to the well being of humanity as a whole. Such values transcend the uniqueness of humanity's richly diverse cultural, philosophical, and social heritage and form the bedrock on which to build not only friendly international relations but also mutual benefit in one-on-one interactions.

Purpose:

Living Values is about delving deep inside to uncover and understand those innermost values that guide individual outlook and activity. The message throughout is for the individual and the collective to find the way back to fundamental core values which are in alignment with natural laws and divine universal principles governing human nature and conduct.

Living Values: A Guidebook

Content:

The guidebook contains three main sections:

I. Value Statements on 12 core values are written in both conceptual and practical terms. Values discussed are: Cooperation, Freedom, Happiness, Honesty, Humility, Love, Peace, Respect, Responsibility, Simplicity, Tolerance, and Unity. Since values are interconnected, these 12 values are meant to serve as guiding values for further exploration of these and all other values.

II. Individual Perspective explains some of the premises and concepts in the Value Statements, particularly as they apply to individual behavior and thought patterns. Discussion includes:

  • How to align thoughts, words, and actions with universal principles of human conduct.
  • How the consequences of action are inescapable.
  • How the individual can maintain cleanliness and honesty in words and deeds, purity in thoughts and actions.
  • How to gain mastery over thoughts, and how to break wasteful thought patterns.

III. Workshops and Activities are designed to help the individual "live" his or her values -- at home, at work, at school, in the community, and in the global neighborhood. Activities include dialogues, seminars, creative group sessions, and other innovative initiatives to encourage active participation.

Supporting Voices: Interspersed throughout the guidebook are archival quotes on values from individuals from within the UN system, including Secretary-Generals, Presidents of the General Assembly, Ambassadors, and Directors of UN Agencies. The messages have been encapsulated in the theme of the UN50: "We the peoples of the United Nations -- United for a Better World."

Sharing Our Values for a Better World (SVBW): SVBW is an international initiative created, organized, and coordinated by the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University, a non-governmental organization of the United Nations in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council and with UNICEF. SVBW was originally a year-long program which started in September 1994 and culminated in a celebration to honor the UN50 (September - October 1995), at which time Living Values: A Guidebook was launched. Due to its popular appeal, SVBW is now into its second year and gaining momentum as outreach activities continue.

"This publication is a beautiful offering to the governments and peoples of the United Nations at its 50th anniversary. The combination conveyed by the book of inspiration, profundity, simplicity and practicality is a compelling and powerful one. This volume will be very useful to teachers, political leaders, community mobilisers and to any individual interested in empowering the human being and transforming society. A reliable guide to be used in our inner and outer journey into the 21st century.

" Leticia Ramos Shahani, Senate President
Pro-Tempore, Chairperson, Committee on Education, Arts and Culture, Philippines.
